Melbourne Bars – Best Melbourne Nightclubs
Nightclubs are an integral part of the ‘Melbourne Bars’ scene and are as wide and varied as Melbourne itself. The music offerings are among the Country’s best and the scene is holding true amongst all the negative publicity. Unfortunately there a few venues that let the entire industry down and all I can say is, thank god these places are beginning to close. Nightclubs are a great way to let one-self go and get engrossed by some serious music. The music offerings that these clubs produce are world class, with some of the best-known Australian and world dj’s gracing their stages. Primarily open Friday and Saturdays, the ‘Melbourne Nightclubs’ scene is also getting a strong following on Thursday and Sundays. There is a strong hospitality night presence on Monday and Tuesdays as well. There are some fantastic venues out there and I suggest throwing your support behind one or all of the clubs listed below.
1. Prince of Wales – 29 Fitzroy Street, St Kilda
All that is enticing and unique about Melbourne, Australia can be found in St. Kilda. Traditionally a haven for the city’s artists, immigrants and other exotic characters, for over 100 years people have flocked to this seaside suburb in pursuit of pleasure. Today the cornerstone of St. Kilda’s musical pleasures resides within The Prince of Wales Bandroom, near the corner of Fitzroy and Acland Streets. The Prince Bandroom has been a host to live music for more than 6 decades. Many of the best local and international bands and DJs play The Prince Bandroom when in Melbourne. It has played host to the likes of Lenny Kravitz, Jack Johnson, Scissor Sisters, Ben Harper, Pink, Coldplay, Bright Eyes and Goldfrapp to name but a very select few.
2. New Guernica - 322 Little Collins Street, Melbourne
New Guernica is the newest and arguably the most unique nightspot in humble Melbourne town. This intimate venue will be open 7 days as a cosy bar and club destination for your afternoon and evening. You can expect refreshing cocktails, good wine, cheese and gourmet gyoza all served to a warm eclectic soundtrack programmed monthly by guest musicians. Later Friday and Saturday evenings the lights dim and weekly parties are held. At New Guernica you may find yourself hosting your own late night picnic in one of our sequestered gazebos or spending the evening with your seat in the badgers backhouse overlooking a beautiful serene lake, the whole time being entertained by only the best local and international artists.
3. Sorry Grandma! – 590 Little Bourke St, Melbourne
Sorry Grandma! is an asylum of pleasure situated deep in the belly of Melbourne's off colour entertainment precinct, King Street. Only a year old, Sorry Grandma! is renowned the world over for its ultra cool but super steamy party atmosphere that is fueled by the very best music offering in the city. Open until seriously late, and with the best international and local DJs booked to rock the majestic Disco upstairs or the intimate Parlour downstairs... we offer the best of all worlds. Designed by Michael Delany of Honkytonks, plus the most fabulous music talent in Australia right now, this is a club where it all comes together extraordinarily well. Whether it's for an evening cocktail, a furious dance work out or a late night hook up, Sorry Grandma! is the place.
4. Eve Nightclub – 334 City Road, Melbourne
Eve, centrally located in inner city South Melbourne, was launched in mid 2006. It has fast become one of the hottest venues around, filling the gap in the Melbourne market, as the “place to be seen.” What began as an empty ground concrete basement in Southbank was transformed into an inner city Garden of Eden. Comprising of several separate areas of intrigue, including the exquisite glamour of the Red Dragon Room, and a place to unwind in the Green Garden Room with outdoor Balinese inspired smoking area, the club quickly fills each night, as the scene comes alive with soulful tunes and alluring cocktails. Always attracting the “it” crowd, Eve plays host to many after parties, private functions, parades and product launches; with exclusive Gold Rooms available for hire, individually serviced by hosts.
5. Loop Bar – 23 Meyers Place, Melbourne
Loop is a versatile project space/bar which presents film and video, audio-visual performance, experimental music and art forums. Our eclectic art program ensures Loop reinvents itself nightly. Our purpose built screens and audio-visual equipment are ideal for live audio visual sets, public film screenings, private film launches, exhibitions and soft, subtle bar backdrop imagery. If you are not attending our arts events, the bar provides a warm and sophisticated ambience: enjoy a quiet beer or cocktail with friends on a weeknight or a more energetic romp soaking up tunes expertly mixed and diced by our resident DJs over the weekends. Always accompanied by live visuals, Loop’s weekends provide an exciting club vibe within the confines of an intimate bar. New features include The Nice & Ego Show – Mr. Nice’s new live audio-visual pop culture set every third Friday of the month, and Photography Night Walks every Thursday. Go to Loop’s website for full program and bar details.
6. Miss Libertine – 34 Franklin Street, Melbourne
Found in the centre of Melbourne, Miss Libertine is the latest offering to the city’s plethora of exciting social hubs and captures all the angles of its inimitable youth culture. Reflecting the local area’s transition from a transit location to what is now the cultural hub of the city. Miss Libertine; surrounded by universities and shopping strips operates as a music venue hosting a range of emerging and established artists from varied backgrounds, with one underlying theme, providing the most innovative and quality music and artistry. The venue boasts the best sound in Melbourne, a total capacity of five hundred; three bars over two levels, a fully equipped recording studio and independent art gallery. On top of this, Miss Libertine is also one of Melbourne’s hottest eateries during the day.
7. Roxanne Parlour – 2 Coverlid Place, Melbourne
Roxanne is perched a floor above one of Melbourne's greatest divey treasures, Charltons' karaoke lounge and pool hall. As you stumble up Coverlid Place it's all overflowing bins, an Astroturf strip to line up on instead of a red carpet (presumably it's easier to hose down), and a hole in the lift door that looks suspiciously like one left behind by a .38 Special.
After trundling up the wooden stairs (part 1900s sweatshop, part Ghostbusters), you'll eventually reach Roxanne. You'll know you're there when you see a lurid neon sign (and yes, it's a red light), the sort that went out of fashion with Don Johnson's pushed-up pastel sportscoat sleeves. The bar/venue/club is a mix of decorating trends du jour: flock wallpaper, draped curtains, a projector showing meaningless video-game loops and a jumble of comfy op-shop couches and armchairs. The music depends on the night (as does an occasional door charge), but it is never at ear-bleeding levels.
8. Revolver – 229 Chapel Street, Prahran
It's not uncommon for certain venues to become institutions and in the case of Prahran's Revolver, institution status was granted, in rough historical terms, just after the invention of the wheel. The sprawling venue at the top of a precipitous staircase, attracts a love/hate relationship with many punters, which likely has more to do with self-hate once said punters find themselves sinking into a couch at 5am rather than any wrongdoing on the part of the bar. Split between the band room, back bar, and Thai restaurant, Revolver is one of those venues that very much suits a turn-up-for-dinner-and-leave-at-breakfast sort of evening's entertainment
9. Q Bar – 257 Toorak Road, South Yarra
Melbourne's longest running Thursday and banging Saturday has hosted the best in international, interstate and inter-Melbourne dudes who play music (DJs). An eclectic mix of vibrant faces, music that’ll have you doing the jiggle bop, drinks that’ll have you incapable of jigglebopping and well, just general fun times. See Qsats (get with the lingo) has pretty much awesomised (home made word) itself into the best nights going round in Melbourne.
10. Seven Nightclub – 52 Albert St, South Melbourne
The legendary Seven Nightclub is one of Melbourne’s premiere nightclubs. Seven offers something for everyone - boasting four very different rooms of fun and frolic. Patrons of the club are welcome to either recline, drink in hand in one of the many lounge areas or to dance the night away to a soundtrack provided by some of the most talented artists from Melbourne and around the world. Music ranges from electro house on Thursdays to urban and party music on a Saturday night. Almost 10 years after it first opened its doors to Melbourne’s revelers, Seven Nightclub continues to bring Melbourne what it needs, nestling itself in the hearts and minds of those who skip, hop or jump through the doors.
